An IT engineer is taking on RAFA Rides after losing five stone and transforming her health and fitness.

When Liz Curry marked her 60th birthday, her doctor warned her that, if she didn’t make some changes, she might not make it to 61.

“That was quite a shock to hear. I used to walk with a crutch and I had bad knees. I knew I had to make some changes,” said Liz, who lives in Sunderland with her husband Paul.

Liz took up cycling to exercise without putting too much pressure on her joints. She soon found that cycling bought benefits to her overall wellbeing, not just her physical health.

“It’s not just about the exercise, it’s being out in the open air. I work with computers all day long so cycling allows me to get outside in the country, enjoy the fresh air and not think about work for a while,” said Liz.

Liz has lost five stone and she is much healthier and happier. “Making these changes has changed my life and I’m able to do things I haven’t done before. I don’t even know where my crutch is now – I don’t need it anymore.”

With her new zest for life, Liz and Paul decided to celebrate her achievements by signing up to the 25-mile route at RAFA Rides Leeming in June.

The ride is based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, which is a hub for expeditionary air operations, advanced communications and specialist training, including the NATO-accredited Joint Forward Air Control Training Unit.

“My dad was a Royal Marine and I speak to people in the military in my job every day, so doing RAFA Rides and supporting a military charity is a no-brainer really.”

For anyone considering signing up for RAFA Rides, Liz said: “Just go for it. If I can do it, anyone can.”
