On Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June, more than 750 riders from 11 countries across the globe came together for the popular annual cycling challenge, RAFA Rides 2022, raising money for the RAF Association.

A record 352 riders took on routes around the beautiful, sunny Leicestershire and Rutland countryside, with more than 400 taking part virtually. Together they raised over £95,000 to support people in the RAF community who are in need.

The event, which was made possible thanks to generous ongoing support from defence company Lockheed Martin UK, was created so people across the world could join together both in person and virtually, in support of the RAF community.

Once again, virtual riders took part from the many places members of the RAF community find themselves. There were riders from Norway to New Zealand and Saudi to Cyprus, all united for one cause. During the day, live feeds between Leicestershire, RAF stations across the UK and the teams in other countries brought the riders together, despite being dispersed all around the world.

Air Vice-Marshal Gary Waterfall, RAF Association ambassador and RAFA Rides founder, said:

“I continue to be amazed at how this event is growing each year. The support our RAF community shows to those who need a little bit of help is incredible. Once again RAFA Rides can call itself as a truly global event.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in the event, from the amazing riders and their families, the volunteers who made the day the success it was and everyone who sponsored riders. In these very difficult financial times it is moving to see people still donating money to a cause dear to them.”

Amy Petterson, Head of Community Fundraising at the RAF Association, added:

“I’d like to echo Gary’s thanks to everyone who made this year’s RAFA Rides such a success – again! RAFA Rides 2023 promises to be even more exciting, so watch this space.”
