On 1 July 2021, the title of the Royal Air Force Senior Warrant Officer was formally changed from Chief of the Air Staff’s Warrant Officer (CASWO) to Warrant Officer of the Royal Air Force.

Announcing the news, the RAF said the new title reflects the natural development of the role which was established in 1996. It began as a privileged position as the Chief of the Air Staff’s Warrant Officer and has developed into a more supportive role for all of the RAF senior leadership team.

In a video interview the current post-holder, Warrant Officer Jake Alpert (pictured above), talks about the Chief of the Air Staff’s decision to change the role title and also gives a personal insight into his time in the RAF, including his motivation and advice for service personnel.

He says:

“I support everybody in the Royal Air Force, with a focus on my support to the deputy commanders and members of the senior leadership team. I can present the lived experience to members of the executive committee of the Royal Air Force because … I do spend the majority of my time – subject to COVID – visiting people and having chats with other ranks.”  He continues: “I just want everybody to have a great experience while serving, and that families, friends and loved ones are also taken care of.”

In 2020 Jake gave a 50 minute interview to the RAF Association about his role and responsibilities and his service in the RAF Regiment, parachute squadrons, Royal Marines and much more.
