Remembering the crew of 12 Squadron at the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club

A short rededication event was held at the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club on Monday 8 February 2021, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the tragic loss of seven airmen on board the 12 Squadron Wellington aircraft.

The aircraft was returning from a training sortie, where the crew had been familiarising themselves with the front and rear gun turrets, when it struck a tree en route to Tollerton airfield at 1220. Seven of the nine crew members were killed.

Mr Alan Hardy, the owner of the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club kindly agreed to the reconstruction of the 12 Squadron memorial on the same site.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the number of attendees at the event was severely restricted. However, Wing Commander Phil Gough, representing the RAF Association; Flight Lieutenant Colin Brown, Club Official; and Amanda Fletcher, Managing Director of the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club were in attendance to commemorate the 12 Squadron crew members who lost their lives 80 years ago.

Air Vice-Marshal Ian Gale MBE MBA MA, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff tweeted, ‘thank you so much for this commemoration.’
